    Your reply may be very useful to the nation

    Questions regarding PV power
    * Me , RSSharma,former Extra& Ultra High Voltage Engineer, founder member of 400KV sustem of Rajasthan ( 1982-89)
    * Who demonstrated CSP first time in India October 1985.
    * Then, joined Ministry of Nonconventional Energy Sources/ now MNRE in July 1989. Dedicated 27 Yrs for CSP R&D. After generating 3PATENTS in CSP retired in July 2006, as Solar Thermal Power Scientist F, MNRE.
    * As you are an expert in PV Electrification , therefore , wish to send you few questions regarding PV Electrification.
    * As I found you an experienced person, you maybe the person to answer
    * My questions are ;
    * 1- whether, the fixed PV generation WITOUT BATTERY STORAGE is Grid friendly?
    * 2- Can it feed additional power to the underfrequency grid?Reactive power
    * 3- Can it absorb the excess power from grid without loosing its generation/ fuel , while grid is in over frequency? Synchronous power.
    * 4- in case of fixed PV ,How can we increase the average annual efficiency<7% and Plant Load Factor 20-21% to , parallel with 12.5-21% and + 60% in case of CSP ?
    * 5- Can PV plant deliver power on demand during evening peak and night?
    * 6-Whether the ROOF TOP PV programme will be justified in the unstable grid(S) of India, as there will be no way to evacuate power without availability of distribution Grid.
    * 7- Is India, not loosing Forex Researves and filling the Forex coffer of China by importing manipulated CHEAP PV COMPONENTS from CHINA, instead of installing its own OEM Febs.

    8- How you take care of DC arc formation in panels
    * I am raising these questions since last few months to various Electrical professors of IITs, PV system manufacturers and eminent personalities in PV field, but NO REPLY from any of them
    * You are highly qualified instead of me , having + 34 Yrs combined practical experience in both EHT & UHV transmission and Solar Power including biomass gasifire integration with CSP in 2004.
    * You may be aware that world’s one of the strongest GERMAN GRID WAS FAILED ( tripped) on 12th June 2011 due to over frequency and caused lot of revenue loss to them and by restricting PV power generation below 50.5Hzs,
    * some of the feed in terrif plants have to loose revenue as they are cutoff from the grid .

  • 1- whether the fixed PV generation WITHOUT BATTERY STORAGE is Grid friendly?
    Yes, PV utility-scale power plants are Grid friendly, as inverters have inbuilt Low-Voltage Ride-Through feature.
    2- Can it feed additional power to the under-frequency grid?Reactive power
    No, For Grid under-frequency compensation only two ways are there
    a) Injecting more active power to meet the load
    b) load-shedding, when there are no options to increase generation
    As solar generation depends on the available irradiance, it is not possible to increase active power generation.
    3- Can it absorb the excess power from the grid without losing its generation/ fuel, while the grid is in over frequency? Synchronous power.
    4- in case of fixed PV, How can we increase the average annual efficiency<7% and Plant Load Factor 20-21% to , parallel with 12.5-21% and + 60% in case of CSP?
    In case of fixed PV plant, the standard of measuring efficiency is Performance Ratio(PR). The target PR varies with the geographical location of the plant ( general range of PR: 75%-80%). AVI solar as an O&M service provider maintaining all 700MW plants above target PR through proper maintenance and Qualified Engineers efforts on site.
    5- Can PV plant deliver power on demand during evening peak and night?
    No, since there is no irradiance at night times.
    6-Whether the ROOFTOP PV programme will be justified in the unstable grid(S) of India, as there will be no way to evacuate power without the availability of distribution Grid.
    Yes, it is possible with Microgrid/Hybrid grid technology, we can run the rooftop PV even without the grid. AVI solar installed several rooftops across the globe.
    7- Is India, not losing Forex Reserves and filling the Forex coffer of China by importing manipulated CHEAP PV COMPONENTS from CHINA, instead of installing its own OEM Febs.
    Yes, after make in India slogan from our prime minister, there is a large increase in production of indigenous PV panels but not 100% occupancy. Losing Forex Reserves is a big threat to Indian economy in near future from China. AVI solar using Indigenous SCADA for solar PV plant monitoring, in this way we are supporting Forex reserves.

    8- How you take care of DC arc formation in panels

    1) A Fixed PV plant is Grid Friendly without Battery Storage.
    2) Sir, Usually PV plant is maintained or setup to supply power by Synchronizing with Grid and not to compensate Grid parameters.
    3) No, it cannot absorb excess power from the grid. Grid is for Inverter Reference only not to consume power.
    4) Increase of Efficiency is not possible annually, as panel efficiency is constant.
    5) No, Since PV generation depends on Irradation power is not supplied during night. It is possible provided, if you go for a Hybrid System.
    6) Hybrid and Micro-grid system can serve power under Grid failure.
    7) Definitely yes, We are losing Forex Reserves for PV Panel Import.
    8) By providing Ground Fault monitoring devices like Fuses, Contactors/ relays. we can prevent Fire Hazards on DC side.
